1. Who is
eligible to play in the Danville Youth Football
League?
Students who reside in the
Danville Independent School District and/or who
attend the Danville Independent School District.
2. We live
outside of the Danville Independent School
District. Why can't my child play Danville
Youth Football?
Central Kentucky Youth Football Conference rules
prohibit it. CKYFC rules stipulate a
residency requirement that participants in each
member league must live in that league's school
district or attend school in the district.
Secondly, DYF is insured under the Danville
School System's insurance policy. For
liability issues alone participants must be
students in the Danville School System.
3. What are your
age divisions?
In cheerleading and football we
have three age divisions. Mighty Mite
football is for ages 6 & 7. Mighty Mite
cheerleading is for ages 5 to 7. Pee Wee
is for ages 8 & 9 in both cheerleading and
football. The Tom Thumb division is for
ages 10 to 12. Click "Age Requirements" in the
Site Index for exact details.
4. What is
included in the football registration fee?
Danville Youth Football is one of the
few programs that provides complete football
equipment and uniforms to all players. For
only $50 and just $25 for scholarship players,
children receive everything needed to play
football.
Participants also get free admission to all
Danville High School regular season home games
after the Bob Allen Pigskin Classic, which alone
is a $20 value.
Even more, DYF participants are
provided a FREE youth football camp courtesy of
Sam Harp and his Admiral coaching staff!
The children are given three nights of football
instruction by DHS and Bate coaches and even get
a free camp t-shirt! While this is not
provided by DYF directly it is a gift from the
DHS coach and a benefit to all DYF participants.
If you are comparing DYF to other
local leagues please be aware that they are not
providing the complete set of equipment/uniform
that DYF provides to its participants and be
aware that fancy jerseys always incur
additional cost to the parents. If we did
not provide pants and/or pants pads parents
would have to spend an additional $15 to $25 to
acquire this part of the uniform. If we
wore $30 jerseys, just like some other leagues,
parents would have to absorb most of that cost.
5. When does the
season begin? When is the season over?
Football practice by CKYFC rule
can begin
three full weeks prior to the week of the first
game. The first game will typically be the
Saturday after Labor Day.
The season usually ends the first
weekend of November.
6. How often can
teams practice?
Teams and cheer squads in all
divisions are limited to two practice per week
once the season has begun. Prior to the
first week of the season teams may practice
three times per week. Scrimmages count as
a practice. Mighty Mite teams are limited to 1.5
hour practices. Pee Wee and Tom Thumb may
practice up to 2 hours per session.
At DYF we feel like two practices
per week after the first game strikes the best
balance between participating in sport and
prioritizing school and family time.
7. What are the
playing time requirements for the league?
Players at the Mighty Mite and
Pee Wee level are required to play 2 quarters
per game. Tom Thumb players are required
to play one quarter per game. Playing time
however must be earned. To be guaranteed
minimum playing time players must attend
practice and put forth a sincere effort.
It is important for young players
to begin to understand the concept of "earning"
the playing time they get. It is an
important life lesson to understand that to get
more than the minimum one has to work hard and
be dedicated. As the children progress
toward and into Tom Thumb football earning time
will be increasingly emphasized.
8.
Can I pick which team my child plays football
on?
As part of the
Central Kentucky Youth Football Conference DYF
is required to distribute talent as evenly as
possible between its teams through a draft
system. This is a fairness issue, not only
to our opponents, but also to our players.
If parents were allowed to pick
which team their child played for there would be
no integrity to our draft process and the
distribution of talent within the league would
not be balanced. DYF and the CKYFC are committed
to forming teams with an equal as possible
distribution of talent.
9. Can my child
be moved to another team since I want to help
coach for that team?
Parents truly wishing to serve as
an assistant coach should be willing to help
whichever team their child is drafted to. All
players except the children of a team's head
coach must be drafted when moving up to a new
age division. If we allowed children of
assistant coaches to automatically be placed on
the team, one team could become "loaded" if the
parents of the better players all decide to
assist one team. This creates a very
unfair football experience for the players not
on the loaded team.
10. Why do
players have to return to the team they played
for last season?
Continuity. Most of the
time teams will return 7 to 10 players from the
previous season which gives the team an
established base from which to build.
Continuity for the coaches and continuity for
the players is why we have players return to the
team they played for last season. Rather
than starting over, both coaches and players are
able to pick up where they left off. After
redrafting all players every season, Mercer
County has recently adopted this policy as well
and this is the standard practice in all other
youth football programs.
11. How is DYF
funded?
DYF is
charged with being fiscally self-sustaining.
Accordingly, DYF is funded by registration fees,
concessions sales, fundraisers and donations.
Registration fees do not come close to covering
league expenses. For this reason we ask
that all DYF families do all they can to support
our yearly fund raiser.
12. Who runs DYF?
DYF is a
100% volunteer organization. League
administrators are unpaid volunteers who put in
countless hours to make DYF a reality. A handful
of people deserve special recognition.
Kelley Kuchenbrod, Jon Kuchenbrod and Jodi
Harrison all deserve special thanks for all the
long hours they have worked in building this
league. Click on the Staff link in the left
margin to see the names of current volunteer
staff members.
13. Why does DYF
exist? How did it come about?
DYF
originated in 2006 to address an established
pattern of rapidly declining football
participation among Danville's children.
DYF also sought to address equity issues between
teams to insure that each team had equal access
to quality equipment and uniforms. Of
course we have other goals, but these issues
were central to the formation of the league.
14. How do you
get to be a DYF coach? What are the
qualifications for coaching?
Danville
Youth Football coaches are the same people that
coach youth soccer, youth basketball and youth
baseball..... our children's parents. We select the
most experienced, most qualified parent who is
interested in coaching to serve as a head coach.
Assistant coaches are likewise parents or
sometimes friends of the head coach. We
prefer that our coaches have previous playing
and coaching experience, but this is completely
dependent upon the parent group itself. DYF coaches
are instructed in proper football techniques in
a coaches clinic by the Danville High School football
coaches. All DYF coaches must complete a
volunteer application and clear a
background check.
